Wikipedia has recently strengthened its policy regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the writing of its articles. The site has explicitly prohibited its editors from using text generated by language models (LLMs) to create or rewrite article content. This decision aims to clarify a previous directive that was more vague and prohibited the use of LLMs to generate new articles from scratch.
This policy change was motivated by debates within the community of Wikipedia's volunteer editors. According to 404 Media, the new policy was put to a vote, where it received majority support, with 40 votes in favor and only 2 against.
However, the use of AI is not completely banned from Wikipedia's editorial processes. Editors can still use LLMs to suggest basic modifications to their own texts. These suggestions can be incorporated after human review, provided that the language model does not introduce original content. The policy emphasizes the need for caution, as LLMs can sometimes alter the meaning of the text in ways not supported by the cited sources.
