The Era of AI Agents on WordPress.com
WordPress.com, a major web hosting platform, has recently taken a significant step by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) agents into its services. This decision promises to transform not only how websites are managed but also their appearance and functionality. Announced on Friday, this initiative allows AI agents to handle various tasks such as writing, editing, and publishing content on clients' sites. In addition to these functions, the agents can also manage comments, update and correct metadata, and organize content using tags and categories.
These new capabilities are accessible through an interface where site owners can interact with AI agents using natural language commands. This approach significantly simplifies the creation and maintenance of websites, paving the way for nearly fully automated management by machines, under human supervision.
A Potential Impact on the Web
WordPress, as a publishing platform, powers over 43% of websites worldwide. Although the hosted version on WordPress.com represents only a fraction of this total, it enjoys a massive audience with 20 billion page views and 409 million unique visitors each month. The introduction of AI capabilities could therefore have a considerable impact on how web content is produced and consumed.
This evolution follows the introduction of Model Context Protocol (MCP) support on WordPress.com last fall. MCP is a standard that allows applications to provide context to large language models (LLMs). With this technology, AI assistants can connect to the platform and offer users an overview of their site's content, settings, and analytics through popular AI applications such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, and VS Code.
Extended AI Features
With this update, WordPress.com no longer just allows AI agents to read site content. They can now also create articles, landing pages, and "About" sections, while making structural changes. AI agents also have the capability to approve, respond to, and clean up comments, manage categories and tags, and enhance SEO by correcting alt text, captions, and titles.
All these changes are tracked via the site's Activity Log, ensuring complete traceability of actions performed by AI agents. Users can choose to draft content that the AI agent will then publish, or allow the agent to create content based on provided descriptions. However, every change requires user approval, and AI-generated articles are saved as drafts by default.
The AI agent also has the ability to research the theme and design of the site before it starts creating content. This allows it to understand how to use the same colors, fonts, spacing, and block patterns, ensuring visual consistency with the rest of the site.
Activation and Implications
To activate these new features, WordPress.com users must go to wordpress.com/mcp and select the capabilities they wish to use. They can then connect their preferred AI tool, such as Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT, to start creating content.
While this advancement raises questions about the future of web content, it also offers a unique opportunity to observe how AI models interact and produce content. Companies like Meta and Anthropic have already explored similar initiatives, allowing AIs to publish and manage content under human supervision.
This integration of AI agents on WordPress.com marks an important milestone in the evolution of online content management, promising to redefine traditional roles in the creation and maintenance of websites.
