Wordsmith Raises $70 Million to Transform the Legal Sector with AI

The Edinburgh-based legal AI startup, Wordsmith, has recently raised $70 million in a Series B funding round. This funding was led by Highland Europe, with support from Index Ventures. This capital injection comes as more corporate legal teams seek to reduce their reliance on external law firms.

Founded by former lawyer Ross McNairn, Wordsmith stands out by developing AI software specifically designed for in-house legal teams. Unlike other solutions that focus on assisting individual lawyers with document drafting, Wordsmith aims to automate and manage legal requests across the entire organization.

Rapid Growth in the Legal Tech Sector

The legal tech sector is experiencing rapid growth. In 2024, European startups in this field raised €380 million across 79 transactions. This figure nearly doubled in 2025, reaching €840 million for 93 transactions, according to data from Sifted.

Wordsmith has already attracted over 500 companies, including BT, Canva, Financial Times, Safelite, Trip.com, Sage, and British bank Starling. Its platform manages requests through channels such as email, Slack, Salesforce, and Microsoft Teams, using AI agents to handle routine tasks while escalating more complex cases to legal professionals.

A Distinct Approach for In-House Legal Departments

Ross McNairn, founder of Wordsmith, emphasizes that the legal sector does not need just a simple productivity tool for lawyers, but a solution that integrates all employees into legal matters. Jean Tardy-Joubert, partner at Highland Europe, shares this enthusiasm, stating that Wordsmith offers a tool truly designed for businesses.

With this new funding, Wordsmith plans to accelerate product development, expand its presence in the United States, and increase its workforce to around 300 employees globally by the end of the year.
