Minnesota Upholds Ban on 'Nudification' Apps
A federal judge has ruled that Minnesota's ban on apps that allow users to "nudify" images can continue, despite a legal challenge from xAI. This decision was reported by NBC News.
U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank based his ruling on the timing of xAI's complaint as well as the substance of the law. He noted that xAI filed its request for a temporary restraining order on July 29, 2026, nearly three months after the law was signed, and just three days before it was set to take effect on August 1.
Frank stated that this delay in filing the action and motion suggested that the harm was not immediate. This ruling does not end xAI's lawsuit against the ban, but it allows the law to go into effect while the legal proceedings continue.
xAI's Arguments Against the Ban
xAI argued that the ban is "overly broad" and that there are "much less restrictive alternatives that achieve the same goals." This ban is the first of its kind in the United States.
Earlier this year, users of Elon Musk's social media platform X, which includes xAI, used xAI's Grok chatbot to disseminate non-consensual sexualized images, leading to investigations and bans.
