SpaceX Absorbs xAI: A Strategic Merger
Elon Musk has taken a new step in his ambitious vision by merging SpaceX with xAI. This decision marks the official end of xAI as a distinct entity and the birth of SpaceXAI. This change is not merely cosmetic but represents a significant transformation in SpaceX's overall strategy.
In February 2025, Musk announced this merger with the goal of an IPO that could redefine the space and technology sectors. SpaceX hopes to raise over $75 billion, with a valuation that could reach $1.75 trillion. This ambition is now bolstered by the trademark filing for SpaceXAI with U.S. authorities, thus sealing the disappearance of xAI.
A New Era for SpaceXAI
The merger goes beyond a simple name change. SpaceX is transforming into a computing powerhouse. The chatbot Grok, developed by xAI, will continue to exist but under the auspices of SpaceXAI, which is expanding its ambitions beyond developing AI tools for the general public. The company aims to become a key infrastructure provider for the tech industry.
An example of this new direction is the agreement with Anthropic regarding the supercomputer Colossus. With its 220,000 GPUs and an energy capacity of 300 megawatts, Colossus symbolizes the power that SpaceXAI intends to deploy. Meanwhile, the TeraFab project, a colossal chip factory in Texas, is under development with Tesla, requiring an investment of $119 billion.
Unique Resources
SpaceXAI benefits from two major assets that few competitors can match. On one hand, the petabytes of data flowing through Starlink provide unprecedented access to global information. On the other hand, the real-world driving database accumulated by Tesla is an invaluable resource for the development of advanced technologies.
SpaceXAI's ambitions do not stop there. The company plans to deploy 1 million data centers in orbit, freeing itself from terrestrial constraints. This bold vision is part of a broader strategy aimed at transforming the tech and space industries.
The Challenges of an Ambitious Merger
However, this merger is not without risks. Investors are expressing concerns about this integration. SpaceX is a profitable company, primarily due to the revenue generated by Starlink. In contrast, xAI consumes about $1 billion per month. By absorbing xAI, SpaceX also takes on these financial losses.
The fresh capital expected from the IPO will be crucial to cover this deficit and fund ambitious projects such as the development of Starship and the deployment of orbital data centers. For SpaceX's historical investors, this merger represents exposure to a costly and uncertain AI sector, which could alter their initial expectations of a purely space-focused player.
