xAI recently unveiled Grok Build, its new coding agent, currently in beta. This tool is only accessible to a select group of users, specifically subscribers of the SuperGrok Heavy service, which costs $300 per month. This initial phase serves as a real-world laboratory, allowing xAI to gather user feedback to fix bugs, improve performance, and add new features, with the aim of gradually enhancing the product's stability.
Grok Build is installed directly through the official xAI website, requiring a login to the user account to activate access. The company presents Grok Build as an advanced programming agent, equipped with a command-line interface, designed for professional developers and complex tasks. This tool is designed to easily adapt to existing workflows, and its graphical user interface-free mode allows agents to be integrated into scripts or automations.
Grok Build's command-line interface supports ACP, making it easier to create custom bots and applications capable of orchestrating multiple agents. For the most complex missions, Grok Build can operate in scheduling mode, preparing a detailed strategy that the user can approve, modify, or completely rewrite before execution begins. Once the green light is given, each change appears as a clear and organized diff.
xAI also promises immediate integration with tools already used by developers. AGENTS.md files, plugins, hooks, skills, and MCP servers are all directly supported by Grok Build. In practice, simply launching Grok Build in an existing repository allows it to automatically recognize the project's conventions and organization.
For heavier projects, the tool can delegate certain tasks to specialized sub-agents running in parallel, aiming to distribute the workload and accelerate development. Grok Build also manages advanced integrations with work trees, even allowing some sub-agents to run in their own dedicated spaces.
The question remains whether Grok Build is capable of shaking up its rivals, such as Claude Code from Anthropic. Only a thorough trial will determine that.
