xAI Launches Grok Build on GitHub After Data Scandal

xAI's AI coding agent, Grok Build, has faced intense criticism after users discovered that it was uploading all files from a directory to xAI's Google Cloud servers. One user reported that SSH keys, password databases, documents, and photos had been transferred. Elon Musk subsequently announced that all uploaded user data would be completely deleted. xAI has disabled the upload feature and released the full source code on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license to restore trust.

Grok Build is a terminal-based coding agent, invoked via the grok command. It can read and modify codebases, execute shell commands, search the web, and manage long-running tasks, whether interactively, without an interface for scripting and continuous integration, or integrated into editors via the Agent Client Protocol (ACP).

By open-sourcing the tool, xAI aims to provide complete transparency. Grok Build can now also operate entirely locally. The codebase spans approximately 844,530 lines of Rust and covers the agent loop, tools, terminal user interface, and an extension system for plugins and sub-agents. Remnants of the upload function are still present in the code but are disabled. According to xAI, data storage has been disabled by default since July 12.
