The dot.com domain is owned by xAI, Elon Musk's company, and currently redirects to the download page for the Grok chatbot. According to the Whois registry, this domain was transferred last July. Additionally, the domain dots.com, which aligns more closely with the product name Dots, belongs to a now-defunct company.

On X, a viral post attributes a joke to Musk

Internet users suggest that Musk or his team may have made a joke upon learning the name of OpenAI's new product and purchasing dot.com. An anonymous user on X, @birdabo, who is credited as the first to spot the redirection, describes himself as "chief shitposting officer @SpaceXAI." On September 29, 2026, this account posted a viral message mentioning the acquisition of dot.com and the redirection to the Grok download page.

The typo theory and unowned domains

A more mundane explanation is possible: xAI may have acquired dot.com for typical domain purchasing reasons, particularly to capture searches resulting from a typo on "bot." However, xAI does not own bot.com, nor other obvious variants like vot.com, the latter currently being for sale.
