Yann LeCun, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence, recently expressed his pessimism regarding the future of xAI, Elon Musk's initiative in the AI field. According to LeCun, the prospects for this venture are hardly promising.

LeCun highlighted the difficulties Musk has faced in attracting top-tier AI experts. These complications are partly due to the successive departures within xAI's founding team. LeCun, who previously served as Chief AI Scientist at Meta, described xAI as "kind of a failure."

Tensions Between LeCun and Musk

The relationship between LeCun and Musk is marked by a history of tensions and heated debates, particularly on the platform X. In an interview with CNBC, LeCun reiterated his criticisms of xAI, calling it "a bit of a failure."

He specified that Elon Musk now finds himself in a tricky position when it comes to recruiting AI talent. According to LeCun, this stems from a lack of consideration for the initial xAI team, all of whom, except Musk, have left the company.

Departures and Consequences

The last co-founder to leave xAI, Ross Nordeen, was abruptly cut off from the company's internal systems, and his absence was noted in a discussion group, as reported by Business Insider. This situation illustrates the internal challenges xAI is facing.

Furthermore, xAI has made the decision to lease its data centers to competing companies such as Anthropic. LeCun views this strategy as a sign of weakness, indicating that Musk is trying to recoup costs in this manner.

An Uncertain Future for xAI

LeCun expressed a rather bleak outlook on xAI's prospects. When asked about xAI's ability to compete with AI leaders, he answered negatively, thus highlighting his doubts about the company's competitiveness.

xAI is now integrated with SpaceX, which recently went public. Neither SpaceX nor xAI responded to requests for comments regarding these criticisms.

Contrasting Views on Musk's Other Projects

Despite his criticisms of xAI, LeCun acknowledged the successes of Musk's other ventures. He praised the achievements of SpaceX and mentioned that he owns a Tesla. However, he added a critical remark about Tesla's autonomous driving, which he considers incomplete but still useful.
