YouTube Adds AI Agent and Tests Videos Without Data

YouTube enriches its tools for creators with a background agent and experiments on thumbnails and video versions. However, the company does not provide evidence that these aids improve performance and draws a red line when AI creates the entire content.
YouTube does not publish impact indicators but promises time savings
YouTube has declined to share data showing that its AI tools actually improve performance indicators for creators who use them. Amjad Hanif, Vice President of Creator Products, emphasizes that these tools save time, a benefit that he believes can be reinvested in creativity. He also notes that during video version tests, the platform ensures that the three proposed variants are not radically different from one another.
An AI agent in the background to scan catalogs and suggest optimizations
At the annual Made on YouTube event, the platform announced an update to its suite of creator tools, unveiled in 2025, featuring more advanced AI capabilities. The first version already offered A/B testing for thumbnails and a chatbot interface to analyze content performance. The new version introduces an AI agent that operates in the background to optimize channels: it monitors the video catalog to identify content that has become relevant again, related to current events, or is trending, and suggests adjustments to titles and thumbnails of older videos. According to Amjad Hanif, this agent can also generate proposals for brands by analyzing the channel and extracting demographic and audience data to convince sponsors. Creators can also request feedback on their videos and thumbnails, and the agent is capable of automatically generating thumbnails and titles from a video's content. YouTube hopes that creators will adopt these tools to optimize their content.

Dynamic tests: up to three thumbnails and three video versions in parallel
A dynamic thumbnail tool now allows creators to upload up to three different images per video. The system then assigns the best-performing thumbnail to different audience segments in an attempt to increase watch time. YouTube also allows testing three versions of the same video, which can differ in the introduction, hook, or structure. Each version is presented to small groups of users to compare the watch time generated. The creator can choose the winning version, or the platform will apply it automatically after seven days.
AI, accepted efficiency but full production deemed problematic
The use of AI by creators has sparked controversy. Earlier this summer, Hank Green irritated some of his audience by admitting to using AI for his research, while some observers attributed the reaction more to burnout and exhaustion in the creator industry. Other cases of brands using, promoting, or suspected of using AI have also caused scandals, reinforcing the idea of a reputational risk for public figures. Amjad Hanif distinguishes the use of AI for efficiency from that where the tools do all the creator's work, deeming it problematic when the content no longer seems to come from the creator themselves. He cites script writing, scene shooting, and complete content creation by AI as uses that could pose problems for creators and viewers.
