The European Union has taken a significant step in regulating artificial intelligence by introducing new transparency rules. These rules, which came into effect on August 2, aim to facilitate the identification of chatbots and deepfakes generated by AI on the Internet. This initiative is part of the AI Act, which requires companies to notify users when they interact with AI systems or when content has been generated or modified by these technologies.
The transparency obligations vary depending on the role of companies in the AI ecosystem. Providers, who develop and market AI systems, as well as deployers, who use these systems on their platforms and services, are both affected. Some companies, such as Meta and SpaceXAI, find themselves in both categories, which obliges them to comply with increased transparency requirements.
For providers, it is imperative to design AI systems that can clearly indicate their artificial nature. For their part, deployers must ensure that users are informed about the use of AI in the interactions or content they consume.
