Runway Commits to the Future of AI with a $10 Million Fund

Runway, the startup specializing in AI-generated videos, is expanding its scope by launching a $10 million venture capital fund. This fund is intended to invest in early-stage companies focusing on artificial intelligence, media, and world simulation. The founders of Runway shared this new initiative with TechCrunch, emphasizing their ambition to create an ecosystem around what they call “video intelligence.” In addition to this fund, Runway is establishing a Builders program that offers free API credits to startups, further reinforcing their commitment to supporting technological innovation.

A New Era for Runway: Beyond Creative Tools

Runway has established itself as a key player in the field of AI video generation, with its tools widely used in film, advertising, and marketing. However, with the introduction of its “general world models” last December, the company aims to explore broader applications than those offered by its current creative tools. By collaborating with startups, Runway seeks to discover new use cases that it could not explore alone. Alejandro Matamala-Ortiz, co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Runway, expressed his vision that video intelligence could pave the way for a multitude of new applications across various sectors.

Runway's Investment Strategy

Runway's fund is based on an investment thesis structured around three main categories:

  • Technical teams innovating in AI by developing new architectures.
  • Creators building applications on top of foundational models, bringing AI to new uses.
  • Companies experimenting with new forms of creation, storytelling, and media distribution.

Over the past 18 months, Runway has quietly supported several early-stage startups. Among them are LanceDB, which develops databases for AI applications, and Tamarind Bio, which uses AI for designing new proteins in the pharmaceutical field. Some startups, like Cartesia, which focuses on real-time audio generation, complement Runway's offerings.

Chang She, co-founder and CEO of LanceDB, stated that the next generation of AI models will be built on multimodal data—video, audio, images, and text together. He emphasized that LanceDB is building the infrastructure layer that makes this possible, and that Runway is one of the few investors who understands the importance of this approach.

The Competitive Landscape of AI Investment

Runway is not alone in the AI startup investment market. OpenAI, for instance, has already established its Startup Fund, and Perplexity has launched a $50 million venture capital fund to support early-stage startups. Meanwhile, CoreWeave inaugurated CoreWeave Ventures in September to back AI companies. Alejandro Matamala-Ortiz pointed out that while Runway is still a relatively small company, it sees opportunities for early partnerships with new teams that can benefit from its expertise.

The Builders Program: A Springboard for Innovation

Runway's Builders program aligns with this same logic of supporting innovation. Early-stage startups can apply for $500,000 in API credits as well as access to Characters, the recently launched real-time video agent API by Runway. This API allows users to interact with generative AI agents, featuring appearances and voices that can range from cartoonish to photorealistic. The Builders program aims to discover what startups can create with this technology.

Already, an initial cohort of startups, including Cartesia, MSCHF, Oasys Health, Spara, Subject, and Supersonik, is using Characters to develop AI customer support agents, interactive brand characters, personalized onboarding experiences, real-time sales assistants, and synthetic media tools. Alejandro Matamala-Ortiz expressed his enthusiasm for the potential of this technology in areas such as telemedicine and education, while anticipating its use in gaming and new entertainment experiences.

Towards a More Immersive and Interactive Internet

Runway sees its general world models as a step towards a more personalized, immersive, and real-time internet. By integrating interactive and immersive elements, these models allow for the generation and simulation of entire environments where users can interact with characters. Other companies, such as Inworld and Charisma, are also developing interactive AI characters for gaming and storytelling, while StoReel is experimenting with AI-generated shows that users can interact with directly. Character AI, for its part, has already gained popularity with its interactive AI characters.

Alejandro Matamala-Ortiz concluded by stating that Runway firmly believes in the emergence of a new type of internet, more immersive and real-time, that will transform the way we interact with the digital world.
