Formula 1 and AI: A Growing Alliance

According to the analysis company Ampere Analysis, the last six months have seen the signing of eight new agreements between Formula 1 teams and companies specializing in artificial intelligence. This pace of partnerships is unprecedented, even surpassing the era when cigarette and alcohol brands competed for advertising space on the cars.

The AI companies involved have demonstrated that their models outperform those of their competitors, leading to a complete reorganization of the daily work of the teams. An increasing share of this work is now entrusted to algorithms. Among the notable collaborations, Oracle has partnered with Red Bull Racing, Anthropic with its Claude model at Atlassian Williams Racing, CoreWeave with Aston Martin, and Google with its Gemini model at McLaren.

AI at the Heart of Racing Strategies

Formula 1 teams have always been on the lookout for the best technologies to ensure their vehicles reach the podium. Since the rise of Big Data in the 2010s, the discipline has become as much digital as it is mechanical. The introduction of AI into the championships was therefore inevitable, starting with machine learning in 2018, before generative and agentic AI models took over in the last two seasons.

At Atlassian Williams Racing, Anthropic's Claude model has been integrated into the team's operations and racing strategy. This model is capable of ingesting FIA regulatory updates, synthesizing thousands of pages of technical documentation. It also analyzes telemetry data from the cars and racing variables in real-time to provide advice to engineers. Peter Kenyon, a board advisor, states that this partnership is essential for the team: “It’s much more than just a sticker on a car or a billboard. What Anthropic and our technical team are doing is identifying opportunities and integrating them into our organization to demonstrate, for ourselves and for them, their technology in the quest to bring Williams back to the top.”

At Oracle Red Bull Racing, the integration of AI is even deeper. Jack Harington, head of group partnerships, describes a fundamental shift in the very nature of AI contributions within his team: “We’ve moved from a sort of basic AI to a more agentic approach, where instead of just looking for something, the system now provides decisions.” Where an engineer previously had to juggle dozens of variables during a race to advise drivers, for example, to pit, the agentic system cross-references them in real-time and submits a recommendation before the question even arises. “It’s really leveraging the strengths of AI as an enabling tool for our team, allowing them to focus on their core responsibilities and perform their tasks better.”

Significant Increase in Technological Investments

McLaren, for its part, has refocused its partnership with Google around Gemini, dropping Google Pixel in the process, a partnership that began in 2022. Aston Martin has bet on CoreWeave, a cloud infrastructure valued at $65 billion, to have immense computing power. This drastically reduces the rendering time of aerodynamic models, processes data streams from thousands of sensors during testing, virtually tests crash resistance, and deploys AI agents capable of suggesting engine mapping modifications. The potential is virtually limitless.

A key figure to remember from this transformation is $769 million, representing the overall investment in technology, including AI, for the entire sector last season. This expenditure, up 41% compared to 2024, now exceeds all others. This influx of resources serves one purpose: to help teams stay under the $215 million annual budget cap allowed for 2026, while not giving up any competitive advantage over rivals subject to the same constraints. This budget cap, designed to level the playing field, has ultimately accelerated the race towards AI, transforming it, in just two years, into an essential technology for aspiring to the podium.
