Rivian Introduces an Innovative AI Assistant

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has announced the launch of its new Rivian AI Assistant through a software update. This feature is available for owners of the R1T and R1S models who subscribe to the Connect Plus data plan. The upcoming R2 model will also benefit from this technology upon its expected release later this year.

Unlike other systems, the Rivian Assistant is integrated directly into the vehicle's hardware and software, without relying on a phone mirroring system or a cloud connection. This allows it to natively access nearly all vehicle systems, providing advanced features that go beyond simply answering questions.

Rivian initially showcased this AI assistant during its Autonomy & AI Day event last year. The company's engineers and software developers detailed how they planned to leverage the computing power of the R1 and R2 electric vehicles to develop a new generation of driver assistance and autonomy features, including the now-available Rivian Assistant. For current and future owners, this suite of features is substantial enough to justify the wait.

Unified Intelligence: A Powerful Underlying Platform

The Rivian Assistant is built on the Unified Intelligence platform, which the manufacturer describes as a "multimodal AI foundation." This technology operates across the company's products and operations and represents Rivian's version of shared AI, a concept that automakers and tech giants have promoted in various forms in recent years.

The idea is that the same unified AI model can learn from customer data, vehicle telemetry, and operational context, rather than treating each data set as a separate silo. This enables a more comprehensive and useful functionality for the end user.

First announced in December, the Rivian Assistant is now being deployed in the R1 electric vehicles.

Features of the Rivian Assistant

By holding down the left steering wheel button or saying "Hey, Rivian," the assistant begins to listen. Vehicle control functions range from the more familiar—calling a contact, navigating to a location, adjusting the temperature—to more advanced tasks like changing driving modes, adjusting ride height, opening the front trunk, or checking range estimates upon arrival.

Contextual commands are particularly interesting. Rather than requiring precise phrasing, the assistant interprets natural language and intent. For example, the command "Make everyone's seats warm except mine" demonstrates how the system understands the implicit (all seats except the driver's) and acts accordingly. This approach makes voice control genuinely useful for users, beyond the usual robotic interactions.

Navigation also works in natural language. You can ask for a coffee shop near your destination without having to search by category in the map interface, or request directions without specifying the exact address. Multimedia queries follow a similar pattern; you can ask when a song was released or request something similar to what is currently playing. While these features are not revolutionary compared to smartphone assistants, the integration with the vehicle's native software and hardware is tighter than what Android Auto or Apple CarPlay offer.

Integration with Google Calendar

One of the most cutting-edge features of this deployment is the integration with Google Calendar, which Rivian presents as the first in a series of external connections. The argument is simple: managing calendar events via your phone while driving is a bad idea, and doing so through a native assistant in the vehicle promises to be safer and faster.

This integration allows you to check your schedule, reschedule appointments, or execute multi-step tasks with a single voice command. For example, checking your schedule, finding a coffee stop on your route, and sending your arrival time to a contact, all in a continuous flow, illustrates this agentic aspect. Rather than giving three separate commands and waiting for each to be completed, the Rivian Assistant acts more like a human assistant to whom you have delegated a task and chains the steps together—at least, that’s the vision.

Privacy and Availability

According to Rivian, owners retain control over the data collected by the Rivian Assistant. The activation word "Hey, Rivian" can be disabled, location sharing can be restricted, and the memory function—which stores personal context across sessions and trips—can be completely turned off. Data is linked to individual driver profiles, not the vehicle, which seems to be the right approach for households with multiple drivers.

The full functionality of the Rivian Assistant requires an active subscription to the Rivian Connect Plus data plan or an active trial and is currently available only in English. Rivian has not announced any price changes (still $15 per month or $150 per year) or bundling adjustments with this deployment, so the value of Connect Plus is somewhat enhanced compared to before the existence of this feature, particularly for owners who were undecided about their renewal.
