Meta Challenges AI Competition with Muse Spark 1.1 for Coding

Meta publicly launched a new version of Muse Spark on Thursday, a multimodal AI model designed for agentic coding, aiming to compete with similar products offered by OpenAI and Anthropic.

Spark 1.1, whose first version was announced in April, can engage in multi-step reasoning and handle complex processes, manage digital workflows, and deploy new features in enterprise systems, according to the company.

Meta is somewhat lagging behind its competitors; Anthropic and OpenAI have been offering similar models for some time. However, this does not mean that Meta's entry into the market does not pose a threat.

A continuing source of competitiveness in the AI industry remains the cost of use, and Meta appears to offer a competitive rate. Reuters reports that the company will charge $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens. This places it in line with (albeit slightly above) Claude Haiku 4.5 from Anthropic and GPT-5.6 Luna from OpenAI.

Meta's pitch to users is Spark's ability to handle heavy agentic workloads, fix bugs, and assist with large code migrations — the type of automation that businesses are increasingly turning to AI companies to provide.

“Muse Spark 1.1 delivers exceptional performance in personal agentic tasks requiring planning and orchestration across a range of external applications and services,” the company wrote in a blog post.

Meta has released a handful of foundational AI models over the past few years. The launch of Muse Spark was apparently significant enough to prompt CEO Mark Zuckerberg to post on X for the first time in three years. Zuckerberg's last post was in July 2023, around the time the platform rebranded from Twitter to X.

In his post, Zuckerberg described Spark as a “powerful agentic and coding model at a very low price,” noting that the model was “the best performer in terms of agentic performance, tool usage, and computer utilization.”

Zuckerberg also mentioned that there is “more to come soon” — implying that the company plans to release additional models.

This week has been rich in AI announcements — particularly for Meta, which also unveiled a new AI image generation model on Tuesday, called Muse Image. Other launches this week include a new version of Grok from SpaceXAI and a new family of models from OpenAI, GPT-5.6, which was also released on Thursday. It’s safe to say that competition within the AI industry is as dynamic as ever, and companies looking to stand out from their peers have their work cut out for them.
