Midjourney v8.1: A Strategic Update
Midjourney has announced the rollout of the alpha version 8.1 of its image generator, an update aimed at addressing the criticisms directed at version 8.0. This new version, announced on April 14, 2026, reintroduces several beloved features while significantly reducing the costs associated with certain options.
The v8.1 alpha, available at alpha.midjourney.com, marks a return to a more consistent aesthetic, aligned with the spirit of version 7. Moodboards and style references (srefs) are now more stable and reliable. The HD mode, which offers a native 2K resolution, becomes the default mode and is now three times faster and three times less expensive than in v8.0. The standard resolution also sees an improvement, being 50% faster and 25% cheaper, with generation speeds equivalent to the Draft mode of v7.
Several features that had disappeared with v8.0 are making a comeback in this new version. Image prompts, allowing users to use an existing image as a reference, are once again available, along with image weights. A new Prompt Shortener has been introduced to automatically shorten prompts that exceed the length limit. Additionally, the Describe feature has been updated to provide more detailed descriptions tailored to the prompting style of v8.
Version 8.0, launched in mid-March 2026, had been presented as a complete rewrite of the model on a new GPU architecture. Performance gains were praised, with generation speeds approximately five times faster than previous versions. However, several points had crystallized criticism, notably an aesthetic break from v7 and high costs for advanced features, which required four times more GPU time than a standard generation.
With v8.1, Midjourney aims to address these issues by reintroducing elements favored by the community. The startup also plans to disable v8.0 in the coming weeks, a departure from previous versions that remained accessible. It is worth noting that v8.1 is not yet available on the main site or via Discord. Upcoming steps include the development of upscalers for v8, as well as editing, inpainting, and outpainting models.
