Yang founded Moonshot AI in 2023 after studying in the United States. He was part of a select group of PhD students specializing in machine learning at Carnegie Mellon University, a renowned institution for its AI programs.

Ruslan Salakhutdinov, a professor at Carnegie Mellon and Yang's former advisor, identified four qualities that make Yang an exceptional leader in the field of AI: rare independence, original thinking, impressive technical breadth, and bold ambition. Salakhutdinov, who has mentored many researchers who have become major figures in companies like OpenAI and Google DeepMind, emphasizes that these traits are crucial for success in such a competitive environment.

According to Salakhutdinov, the top-performing AI researchers he has trained share intense motivation and marked self-direction, supported by a rigorous work ethic. These elements, combined with a stimulating academic environment, drive them to excel.

A Self-Directed and Innovative Researcher

Yang stood out from the moment he arrived at Carnegie Mellon. He entered the PhD program immediately after completing his undergraduate degree and quickly established himself as a self-directed and innovative researcher. In just four years, from 2016 to 2019, he completed his PhD while contributing to the development of XLNet, a notable AI language model.

In 2019, long before ChatGPT became popular, Yang expressed his belief that a single AI model could perform various tasks from simple natural language instructions, without the need for distinct models for each function. This forward-thinking vision made an impression and laid the groundwork for his future innovations.

From University to Silicon Valley

Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 model, with its open weights, competes with systems from OpenAI and Anthropic in coding and reasoning. Its launch sparked intense debate in Silicon Valley about advancements in AI in China. The demand for this model was so strong that Moonshot had to temporarily suspend new subscriptions.

In just three years, Moonshot AI has achieved an impressive valuation of $31.5 billion. According to Bloomberg, the company is preparing for a new funding round that could value it at up to $50 billion ahead of a potential IPO.

Salakhutdinov attributes Yang's success to his independence, technical depth, original thinking, and entrepreneurial ambition. Yang possesses a unique ability to combine in-depth research with low-level engineering, allowing him to optimize GPUs for large-scale AI experiments.

A Bold Entrepreneur

Unlike many PhD students who choose academic careers or join large tech companies, Yang opted to start his own business. After a brief stint as a professor in China, he took the risk of founding Moonshot AI.

Salakhutdinov expressed surprise at this bold decision, highlighting the risks associated with starting a company. However, Yang was determined to forge his own path. "I have to try. If I don't try, I will regret it," he told Salakhutdinov, illustrating his determination to innovate and make his mark in the world of AI.
