Sam Altman Critiques Elon Musk's Management at OpenAI
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently testified that Elon Musk's interventions caused "huge damage" to the internal culture of the artificial intelligence startup. This statement was made during the ongoing trial in which Musk is suing OpenAI. Altman revealed that Musk had asked Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, and Ilya Sutskever, former chief scientist, to rank researchers based on their performance, a management style that, according to Altman, was unsuitable for OpenAI's research environment.
Altman emphasized that this type of management, while typical for Musk, was inappropriate for a research lab where psychological safety and time to develop ideas are essential. "I don't think Mr. Musk understands how to run a good research lab," he stated, explaining that Musk's approach, which demanded quick results under threat of dismissal, was incompatible with the nature of the projects undertaken by OpenAI.
Musk's Departure and Its Consequences
Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with Altman and Brockman, left the company in 2018. At the time, OpenAI justified his departure by citing a potential conflict of interest with Tesla's machine learning activities. However, Altman's recent statements suggest a different reality. According to him, Musk's departure was seen as a relief by the staff, who were no longer forced to work under constant pressure.
The trial, now in its third week, has featured several testimonies from influential figures, including Greg Brockman, Shivon Zillis, former board member of OpenAI, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, and Mira Murati, former CTO of OpenAI. Musk accuses OpenAI of straying from its original mission to serve humanity and claims that Altman and Brockman deceived him to secure funding.
