Meta Prepares for Massive Layoffs to Fund AI
Meta is set to significantly reduce its workforce to address the rising costs associated with artificial intelligence. According to information from Reuters, the company plans to cut around 8,000 positions on May 20, which represents about 10% of its global workforce. A second wave of layoffs is expected later this year, which could bring the total job cuts to over 20% of the staff, as reported by Reuters in March. Meta declined to comment on this information.
Massive Investments in AI Infrastructure
These job cuts come as Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, invests hundreds of billions of dollars into AI infrastructure. The goal is to streamline the company's hierarchical structures while relying on employees assisted by artificial intelligence technologies. Recently, Meta reorganized its Reality Labs teams and created a new unit called "Applied AI" to develop autonomous agents.
"Muse Spark": An Innovative but Delayed AI Model
Meta is also working to catch up in the race for cutting-edge AI models. Its new model "Muse Spark" is a native multimodal reasoning model that integrates tool use, visual chain of thought, and multi-agent orchestration. Although this model is at the forefront of architecture, it lags behind Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI on benchmarks. Furthermore, it is the first model of its kind that Meta is not releasing as open weights, reserving it exclusively for its own products and a private API.
