With summer in full swing, mosquitoes are back to ruin our evenings. However, thanks to the ingenuity of Steven Cheng, these pests may soon meet their match. Cheng has developed an innovative system using artificial intelligence to track and eliminate mosquitoes with lasers.
Relying on machine learning, Cheng spent four months developing what he describes in his publications as a "cannon guided by computer vision and deep learning." This device uses a Canon digital SLR camera equipped with a high-magnification zoom lens to identify and target mosquitoes. The technology is sophisticated enough to avoid harming people or household objects, thanks to software that cuts off the laser power upon detection.
To enhance efficiency, Cheng added a wide-angle lens and infrared vision, allowing the system to operate even in darkness. The device has also been mounted on wheels, giving it the mobility to chase mosquitoes outdoors. A Gatling gun-style design has also been integrated to bolster its capabilities.
Cheng has documented his project on X, sharing videos of his mobile mosquito defense system. The research phase has been intense, resulting in "countless bites all over my body," as he explains in a video.
While not everyone is ready to invest in such technology, other solutions like Bug-A-Salt, Thermacells, or hanging mosquito lamps offer alternatives. The Photon Matrix, mounted on a base, was funded through crowdfunding on Indiegogo last year and is expected to ship this summer, costing around $500.
These innovations demonstrate how AI and laser technology can transform everyday challenges into advanced solutions, providing new weapons in the fight against mosquitoes.
